Charizard is the fully evolved form of Charmander, one of the original Kanto starters. Despite looking like a dragon, base Charizard is actually Fire/Flying — a fact that famously hurts it with a devastating 4x weakness to Stone Edge and Rock Slide. But with Mega Evolution, Charizard transforms from a mid-tier starter into a top-tier threat.
Base Stats
Charizard has a Base Stat Total of 534, distributed as 78 HP, 84 Attack, 78 Defense, 109 Special Attack, 85 Special Defense, and 100 Speed. It is a fast special attacker that struggles against bulky walls without setup support. Out of the Kanto starters, it has the highest Special Attack and Speed.
Mega Charizard X vs Y
Mega Charizard X becomes Fire/Dragon, gains Tough Claws ability, and reaches 130 Attack — a physical wallbreaker that melts through neutral matchups. Mega Charizard Y stays Fire/Flying, keeps the Drought ability (permanent sun), and climbs to 159 Special Attack for devastating boosted Fire Blasts. X is better for dragging out long matches, Y is the nuker for short aggressive games.
Best Moveset
For Mega X: Flare Blitz, Dragon Claw, Earthquake, Dragon Dance. For Mega Y: Fire Blast, Solar Beam, Focus Blast, Roost. Solar Beam is a one-turn move in sun, making it absolutely lethal on Y builds.
Counters to Watch
Rock type moves destroy base Charizard. Water and Electric also threaten it. Mega X avoids the Stone Edge weakness by dropping Flying typing. Rhyperior, Tyranitar, and Garchomp all hard-counter standard Charizard builds.
